Gospel Reflection for 29th Sunday in ordinary time Year B – October 21st 2012

Full scripture for this Sunday  is available on our parish website. Daily Scripture is also available. Our parish Prayers of the Faithful for this Sunday are made available on the Dublin Diocesan website.

Mission Sunday
We have missionary memories and traditions in Ireland – collecting stamps, making collections, reading about the missions. Many went on missionary work from our families and parishes, and others volunteered to go, but remained at home.

Christ is Missionary
The church and every parish is missionary, because Christ is missionary. His journeys and preaching were for all nations and all peoples. The motivation of missionaries now is something like what Pope Benedict wrote – to spread the news of a new humanism founded on the gospel of Christ.

Even if people are not baptised, the church wants to point out the way to a truly human life – the way, truth and life who is Christ.  We are passionate about wanting to improve things with the message of the gospel and hope that we can  not only  “speak” of Jesus, but “make Jesus seen.”

Many of our young people  volunteer for longer or shorter times to work in the developing world to bring about the justice based on faith, and work with the missionaries and other NGOs in the field. This is a new mission in Ireland.

Prayer and Help
We  pray today for our missionaries, we help financially;  another time we can vote for people who are concerned for the developing world and who will maintain our aid to the world in need; we can encourage the young to think global

Every generation discovers Jesus in new ways. We pray for courage for our people overseas and also for ourselves that we can live and share the life and care of Jesus in different ways. They are helped by our prayers in what is often a lonely life for them.  This is the day they know they are especially valued and remembered.
