Gospel Reflection for the Baptism of Our Lord – Year B-  January 11th 2015

Full scripture for this Sunday is available on the Catholic Ireland website. Daily Scripture is also available. Our parish Prayers of the Faithful for this Sunday are made available on the Dublin Diocesan website.

In the course of his preaching John the Baptist said, ‘Someone is following me, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals. I have baptised you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’

It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John. No sooner had he come up out of the water than he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, like a dove, descending on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.’

Mark 1:7-11

Today’s reading is the  beginning for Jesus. He knows now that he is specially missioned by his Father-God for what we know will be his life. Maybe he will remember often this time and it will keep him going.

Begin Again
130113_Baptism_of_our_LordBeginning again is part of life. In love we may let someone down and begin again. The student starting another study programme. Back on the tablets which you don’t want to take. Back to Mass at Christmas and you continue. Addictions and beginning again as we give up drink for the tenth time! Sexual addictions, people trying to control their use of the Internet. Driving carefully with care for others. God knows we are the type of people who need new beginnings. The best people are those who know how to begin all the time. This may  be tough and we need support to get life and faith into action.

Begin in Faith
In our faith life too. People may drift a lot from the christian life. Do we call ourselves back enough? …and there is always the welcome in the sacraments and in the parish. There is never a last attempt. God is always the God who calls us back, return, be renewed.

When we begin again, we may be stronger. Like the defeated football team, we say we’ll be back stronger! Never be afraid to begin again, to hear God’s invitation to come to the living water. God is always the God of another chance.
