REFLECTION

A bishop recently  entitled an article, ‘I was baptised before I was made a bishop’!  His point is that all of us by baptism are in a state of vocation!  Baptism is both receiving the love of God in the person being baptised, but is also a call to work in service of the gospel in partnership with Jesus Christ. We are baptised into Christ, ‘priest, prophet and king’.

Other vocations and responses to the call  of God follow in life, like in marriage, in priesthood, in single life;  vocation is lived out in these ways and also as chaplains, teachers, medical carers, and other ways in which we consciously bring our baptismal call into our daily life and work.

Vocation is not a burden, but a gift.  It is a gift from God through Jesus Christ, and is a gift to the world.  In living our Christian life we offer the love, grace and activity of God to others.  Your life and mine is a gift to the world.

Many a family, while sharing a loving life within the family, also work for the parish or other ways to spread some of the gospel of Jesus.  Every sacrament is a way of living out our vocation, as the sacrament of marriage is a promise to spread the love of a marriage among many others.

The hope of following through our vocation is to ‘bring life and bring life to the full’.  It is to make Christ visible in our world; vocation is a privileged call to help Christ in his work today, and ‘to do the world a world of good’.
