Gospel Reflection for 12th Sunday Ordinary Time Year A – June 25th 2017

Full scripture for this Sunday  is available on our parish website. Daily Scripture is also available.

Matthew 10:26-33

Something today about being proud of my faith, declaring in my life and sometimes in words my faith in Jesus Christ. Glad to be in the church, and not afraid to speak the truth and commitment.

An interesting ‘pilgrimage’ is to return sometime to the church of our baptism, imagining the occasion, and thinking about what I like about being given the gift of faith in the church. We can be grateful to our membership in the community of the church for many reasons and upset and angry for others. The church is a mixture of good and bad, as we are ourselves, each of us.

We sometimes in a faith-sharing group ask people how they are thankful for membership of the church. Words like friendship, opportunity to work for others, meaning to life, prayer, the Eucharist, support for family, are mentioned. Also, the way the gospel has helped in life and faith has got us through bad times of loss and sorrow. The negative comes up also – the scandals of recent years and earlier times in the church, the dull liturgies when people are looking for spirituality and for a lift in their lives, the place of women in the church and the celibate clergy. These can turn us off what is worthwhile in our church.

If we are at Mass today,  it’s because we believe there is something good in being a follower of Jesus and expressing it in this community. A pilgrimage to the church of baptism, or pilgrimage in mind if this church is too far away, may engage us in thanks to God, not just for one’s own belief, but for the community of believers.

Lord I thank you this day for my baptism.
