Matthew 22:34-40

REFLECTION

We can think of times in our lives of when we have been loved and have loved – in good times and bad. The joy of love when a relationship is going really well is a moment of sharing God’s love; the joy of bringing a compassionate love to the sick, the migrant, the prisoner and the poorest of the poor is also a moment of sharing God’s love.

The gospel this Sunday is a daring statement of Jesus. While his listeners would agree on the two commandments of loving God and our neighbour, they would be surprised to hear them equalised. The whole of the law hangs equally on these two commandments. There is an essential link in loving God and loving each other.

WHERE DO WE FIND GOD?

Where do we find God – often a question? The direction of finding him is to find the way of love in our lives. In our friendships and marriages, our family life and our commitment to the wider community, we are with God and in communion with him.

This is the heart of religion. The first reading highlights that loving the neighbour includes loving the most poor and the most neglected, as well as loving those closest to us.

We can prepare in parishes and elsewhere for the Pope’s first Day for the Poor on November 19th next, and plan how we can open our hearts to those among us who are poor.

Lord, thanks for the love I have found in my life.
