Gospel Reflection for 24th Sunday Ordinary Time, Year B, September 16th 2018

Mark 8:27-35

The answer to the gospel question, ‘Who do you say that I am?’ is a central theme of our faith.

Our answer is that we know Jesus by his actions and way of life: He would die; he would care for all; he went mostly to the poor a

nd the sick. He was a Jewish man of 30; he was a man of conviction who laid down his life. Each of us has a different answer. It may change with our age.

With the knowledge of love we confess that Jesus is our Lord.

He gives another answer – we recognise him in the poor and needy. As he said in Matthew 25, ‘what you do for others, you do for me’. When we welcome a refugee, help the homeless, console the bereaved, visit the sick, work for peace, contribute to a good cause, we do so for Jesus! Faith without good works is dead.

Another answer: yours is the widest heart of compassion we will ever find in the world!

Lord may your will be done on earth and may your kingdom come.
