Gospel Reflection for 27th Sunday Ordinary Time, Year B, October 7th 2018

SCRIPTURE

Mark 10:2-16

REFLECTION

The Church’s care about divorce and marriage come from Jesus’ care. The gospel today is his command and encouragement to care for marriage – both to married couples themselves and to the church. Our joy at a marriage is our human joy that people love each other enough to say they will spend their lives in love together. That is their hope. The church is to help strengthen marriages with prayer and with groups like Marriage Encounter, Retrouvaille, Teams of our Lady and others which give married couples a space to deepen their understanding of each other and of their relationships.

We live however in a world where many marriages have broken down, and where divorce is quite common. As the community of Jesus – the church – we are committed also to helping people in these situations, and supporting the children.

This is the understanding of Jesus and his compassion. While supporting the ideal of lifelong marriage, he is the one of loving compassion to all in whatever situation they are in. In a parish, a family and other Christian situations we are called to do the same.

Lord, strengthen all of us in our love for each other.
