Gospel Reflection for 21st Sunday Ordinary Time Year A – August 27th 2017
Over the years what have I learned about a very good friend, or a spouse? What have I learned about someone – I can list facts of birth and origin? What have I learned of the person – beneath all the facts, what can I say of someone I am close to? Probably a different sort of answer.
It can be the same with Jesus. Peter lists them names people might have for him – who he is like. But then the ‘who do you say I am’ question, gets an answer that brings Peter alive, and it’s about a living god.
KNOWLEDGE OF FAITH
We can know a lot about Jesus and can even say the Creed. But the knowledge that keeps us going is the knowledge of faith. We know the person whom we have met in different ways all through our lives. We know the one who is the friend, the healer, the guide; knowing him as ‘the way, the truth and the life’ is more than knowing just about him.
This faith-knowledge is got in prayer as well as love; it is a gift of God to us that we know Jesus as one close to us, as one caring for us, as friend.
Lord, teach me to know you more, to love you more and serve you more faithfully in my life.
