Gospel Reflection for Fourth Sunday of Easter Year C – April 17th 2016

Full scripture for this Sunday  is available on our parish website. Daily Scripture is also available.

Jesus said:

‘The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice;
I know them and they follow me.
I give them eternal life;
they will never be lost
and no one will ever steal them from me.
The Father who gave them to me is greater than anyone,
and no one can steal from the Father.
The Father and I are one.’

John 10:27-30

Vocation is a call in the heart for the good of the world. Sometimes we sense a call deep inside ourselves –something that brings us into a relationship with Jesus and with the work of Jesus in the world. It may be to marry someone, to give time to the poor, to change job, to pray. It is finding the way to live out the first vocation of every Christian – the call to love.

Our year of mercy highlights the call of us all to be people of mercy. In family life, neighbourhood, religious life, priesthood, young or old, we are the people to mirror God’s mercy.

At the end of the Synod, Pope Francis spoke to the participantshttp://  – we can walk through the deserts of humanity without seeing what is really there; instead, we see what we want to see.

The figure of mercy is Jesus himself, the one who never wants to lose any of us. He follows his people into these ‘deserts of humanity’ to rescue them; he depends on us now in his work of rescue.

This can also be among people whose meaning in life has been lost, caught in addictions like drugs, alcohol or gambling; caught into crime and violence and who want to break out of it; or who have lost hope and find suicide a temptation. Many feel lost also who are affected by the despair of others and find themselves in the ‘desert’ through no fault of their own.

Vocations’ Sunday is a day to ask how I can do the work of God in the world, the work of love.

Lord, may I follow you as only I can.
